N Printer - A Need of Every Computer
  April 2, 2009

A printer is a revolutionary birth in the world of computing. It is a device, which generates a hard copy of the documents stored in electronic form also known as soft copy. It prints the data on physical print media such as paper or transparencies.
Printers are intended for low-volume printing jobs, which necessitate very less time to get a hard copy of a given document. Printers are sluggish devices and the cost per page is reasonably soaring. Because of improving quality and performance of printers, many jobs that were used to be done by professionals in print shops are now being done by people on their local printers.
Most of the new printers come with USB cable, which serves as a document source. Many printers are principally used as local peripherals, and are attached by a printer cable. Printers that have built-in network interfaces and can serve as a device for hardcopy for any user on the network are commonly known as network printers. Printers are often designed to keep up both local and network connected users at the same time.
Modern printers can directly connect through electronic media such as memory sticks or memory cards, or to devices such as digital cameras, scanners with the help of USB cables and Bluetooth. Printers that include non-printing features are sometimes called Multifunction Printers (MFP) or All-In-One (AIO) printers. Most MFPs include printing, scanning, copying and the facility of fax among their features.
In the early years, the speed of printers was measured in units of characters per second. However, in modern era speed of printers is measured in pages per minute (ppm). The speed of printing 30 pages per minute is considered as a fast speed but there are many inexpensive printers whose speed is far slower than this. Laser printer is the fastest printer which also comes in different variants of its speed. However, its speed is faster than all other printers.
There are various types of printers such as monochrome printer, which can only produce an image consisting of one colour, usually black. A color printer, which can produce images of multiple colors. A photo printer, which can produce images of high resolution with multiple colours.
The world's first computer printer was 19th century mechanically driven equipment invented by Charles Babbage. Now there are many companies, which are providing low-priced printers with admirable performances and features. Such companies are Canon, HP, LG and Toshiba etc. to name few.

N Waste not and be more efficient
Less is more when you look at the bigger picture and how a little extra effort can save the environment.
Last year, HP jumped onto the green bandwagon full-force with its new HP Eco Solutions program, which helps customers identify HP initiatives, products and services designed with the environment in mind.
The company also launched a new line of greener products with the D2545 color inkjet printer. The Energy Star qualified printer is made of 83 percent recycled plastic and comes with a cartridge made of recycled plastic resins.
HP also has several programs for recycling various products and components from print cartridges to computer hardware.
This year, HP has bared more cost-saving opportunities by managing printing in companies utilizing the company¡¦s innovations to reduce energy costs and control the output environment.
¡§With the current global economic climate, there has been an increasing need to make everything spent count,¡¨ says Jerome Nicdao, commercial and enterprise business manager, Imaging and Printing Group, HP Philippines.
Pre- and post-analysis of some HP Managed Print Services Solutions imaging and printing operations reveals energy savings of between 30 percent and 80 percent and reductions in paper consumption in the millions of pages.
As an example, Nicdao cites 3M, which consolidated its fleet with energy-efficient HP multi-function printers and laser printers. As a result, the company reduced energy consumption by about 79 percent and saved $1.25 million in energy costs and about 35.3 million fewer printed pages in about three years.
Now, that¡¦s a lot of trees.
3M expects 8,240 metric tons reduction of carbon emissions from energy and paper reductions and that is equivalent to taking 978 cars off the road for one year!
Viacom worked with HP to reduce its global device count and is projected to save up to 25 percent in imaging and printing costs over the next three years, including 50-percent reduction in the number of its print, copy or fax devices.
In addition, by changing document workflows like scan-to-e-mail and setting printers to duplex mode, Viacom estimates a 12.5-percent reduction on the number of pages printed with projected savings of over 10 million sheets of paper.
The output fleet also uses 66.2 percent less energy than it did before MPS was implemented and this translates to a reduction valued ay $111,409. This is projected to reduce Viacom¡¦s carbon emissions associated with energy by almost 839,000 pounds.
HP also recommends innovative technologies that also help reduce energy costs.
¡§HP Laserjet Devices help companies save up to 50 percent on energy use with Instant-on Technology while HP Webjet Admin firms can preset sleep and wake modes to turn off devices at night and during the weekend. This will help them save up to 66 percent on energy costs for office equipment,¡¨ says Nicdao.
Nicdao points out that companies can even save more and reduce paper consumption by at least 30 percent with the deployment of duplex-capable devices or setting printing defaults at the network level using HP Webjet Admin and HP Universal Drive Printer.
¡§At HP, switching to default duplex mode with HP Universal Print Driver is estimated to reduce total paper volume by 800 tons annually, translating to annual savings of more than $7 million,¡¨ he adds.
